I was honored to be invited to deliver the commencement address for Merritt College’s 2016 graduation ceremony. In three short years I went from serving as the Director of Student Activities and coordinating the commencement to being invited to deliver the keynote. The Mission I had the honor and privilege to serve as one of the chaperones to the delegation of 20 students on a China-USA Exchange Study Abroad program. The two week program was designed to connect Chinese and American students for formal introduction to Chinese language, culture and history. The Education We were hosted by two Chinese universities. For week one, we were at Beijing Language and Culture University. While there, we experienced intense classes on Chinese language, culture and history. Along with classes on basic language and Chinese Characters, our groups was taught about the Peking Opera, Chinese Tea Ceremony, Kung Fu and Chinese Calligraphy. We spent our second week in Shanghai at Fundan University. Our curriculum at Fudan focused on Chinese economy and business. We learned about the economic reform polices that have contributed to China becoming the second largest economy in the world and also about the challenges they are currently facing in transitioning from a manufacturing economy to one that is focused on the supply side.
